Unit Title: Chemical Bases of Life
Grade Level: 9th - 11th grade
Subject: Biology
Duration:15 to 20 days

Goals
Students will identify and learn the biological molecules of life. They will also learn the function of each molecule and methods for distinquishing between them.

Problem
You are a researcher on the enterprise. Your team has discovered a world that might be fit for human colonization. Your task is to identify and categorize the food sources found on this planet, and determine if the food is compatible with food found on Earth.

Content Standard
  • Investigate cells using a compound microscope.
  • Construct a model of a prokaryotic or eukaryotic cell.
  • Design a graphic organizer that compares proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids.
  • Conduct tests to detect the presence of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids.
  • Design a model that illustrates enzyme function.
  • Demonstrate the movement of chromosomes during mitosis in plant and animal cells.
  • Design and conduct an experiment to investigate the effect of various solute concentrations on water movement in cells.
  • Analyze experimental data to distinguish between active and passive transport.

Objectives, Outcomes or Framing Questions
  • Identify the structure of an atom
  • Describe the location of atoms on the periodic table.
  • Distinguish among proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids.
  • Identify positive tests for carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins.
  • Identify how enzymes control chemical reactions in the body.
